Garden City, N.Y. (October 23rd) -- The Saint
Anselm Hawks women's soccer team was on the road this afternoon to
take on Adelphi. Despite a very impressive 12 saves by goalkeeper
Jackie
Cooney (Braintree, Mass.), the Hawks were defeated by
a 3-0 final. The loss drops the Hawks record to 5-9-1 overall and
5-8-1 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the win improves
Adelphi's record to 8-6-1 overall, and 8-6 in the Northeast-10.
The offensive strike by Adelphi began quickly, as they shot the
ball 12 times in the first half, forcing Cooney to make seven of
her saves in the 45-minute period. Brianne McDonnell
(Commack, N.Y.) opened the Panthers scoring in the 28th
minute when she was set up by Kim Volinski (Greenport,
N.Y.) on a give and go. Volinski added a goal of her own
just four minutes later to make the score 2-0.
The Panthers added their third goal just two minutes into the
second half on a goal by Kaitlin Monteith (Deer Park,
N.Y.).
Teresa
Vercollone (Pembroke, Mass.), Erika Sartor
(Andover, Mass.) and Jillian Tonelli (Cunningham,
Mass.) each put a shot on target for Saint Anselm in the
loss.
The Hawks return to the pitch on Wednesday to play their final
game of the regular season, as they take on Franklin Pierce. The
game is slated to begin at 4:00 pm.
