Pleasantville, N.Y. (October 2nd) - - The Saint
Anselm Hawks Volleyball team played in a tri-match this afternoon
at Pace University against Pace and Mercy College. The Hawks earned
their first win of the season in their second match against Mercy,
splitting the day 1-1. The Hawks record now stands at 1-9
(Northeast-10, 0-5).
The first match of the afternoon saw for the Hawks was against
host school Pace University. The Hawks dropped the three set 25-19,
25-23, and 25-20. In the match, Charlotte
Tencza (Greenfield, Mass.) led the Hawks with 12 kills
and 11 digs. Rachel Flaherty
(Cold Spring, N.Y.) assisted on 28 kills for the Hawks,
while recording 4 digs. Margaret Tereshuck (Mission Viejo,
Cal.) had 15 digs to lead Saint Anselm defensively.
The second match of the afternoon was a different story for the
Hawks. The team came out strong and won their first game against
Mercy 25-17. They then dropped the next two sets 25-21 and 25-18,
but came back and won game four to force a fifth and deciding game.
In the fifth set, the Hawks rallied off six straight points while
Tereschuck was serving to take the lead 7-1. Mercy cut the lead to
five at 13-8, but the Hawks won the game 15-9 to win their first
match of the 2010 season.
In the Mercy match, Lauren Ross
(Dracut, Mass.) and Samantha Elliot (Cumberland,
R.I.) each had 14 kills to lead the Hawks offensively.
Freshman Kylie Kozowski (Quincy, Mass.) also
tacked on ten kills for the Hawks. Flaherty had 48 assists, while
Tereschuck led the Hawks again defensively, tallying 34 digs.
The Hawks will take the court again on Wednesday, October 6th
when they play their first Northeast-10 Conference home match
against Franklin Pierce. The match is set to begin at 7:30 pm.
