Manchester, N.H. (October 16th)- - The Saint
Anselm Hawks women's soccer team was in action today against
the River Hawks of UMass.-Lowell. Before the game, the Hawks
recognized five seniors on their accomplishments to the program.
After the celebrations, the Hawks played hard to a 2-1 victory in
overtime. The Hawks record improves to 5-7-1 overall (5-6-1,
Northeast-10). The River Hawks record falls to 6-7-1 overall (6-6,
Northeast-10) with the loss.
Teresa Vercollone (Pembroke, Mass.) scored her
third goal of the season just 29 minutes into the game. She got a
rebound at her feet and put the ball just under the bar for a 1-0
Hawk lead. Jackie Cooney (Braintree, Mass.) made
all five of her saves in the first half, while keeping the River
Hawks off the score sheet.
In the second half, the Saint Anselm out shot UMass.-Lowell 7-4,
but it was Sarah Raye (Salem, N.H.) that tied the
game for the River Hawks in the 83rd minute off a rocketed
free-kick shot. The game entered overtime after neither team could
find the back of the net in regulation.
It only took 42 seconds for the game to end, when Jackie
McEvoy (Spring, Texas) ended the game when she found
herself on the receiving end of a Jennifer Pearl
(Stoughton, Mass.). McEvoy blasted a shot out just outside
the six-yard box, propelling the Hawks to victory.
The Hawks will be in action again this Tuesday when the travel
across town to take on Southern New Hampshire. The game will kick
off at 7:00 pm.
