Samantha
Elliott's (Cumberland, R.I.) 15 kills, the Saint
Anselm Hawks volleyball team edged out the Golden Knights of Saint
Rose by a 2-3 final. The win, which improves the Hawks record to
2-11 overall (1-7, Northeast-10), was the first for the Hawks in
the Northeast-10 Conference. The loss drops the Golden Knights
record to 5-15 overall (2-6, Northeast-10).
Saint Anselm dropped the first set to the Golden Knights by a
25-20 final. Charlotte
Tencza (Greenfield, Mass.), Kyla Gustavson
(Nashua, N.H.) and Elliott each had two kills in the set,
which the Hawks led until the score was 18-18. The Golden Knights
led 20-19 and rattled off five more points to win the set.
The second set was taken by the Hawks, 25-20. Tencza led the
Hawks with four kills in the set, while Rachel Flaherty
(Cold Spring, N.Y.) tallied eight assists in the win.
Saint Anselm led the set 21-13, until a seven point run was put on
by Saint Rose to make the score 21-20. After a Tencza kill to make
the score 22-20, Flaherty took the serve and led the Hawks to the
second set victory.
Lauren Ross
(Dracut, Mass.) tallied four kills in the third set to
lead the Hawks to another 25-20 victory. Neither team controlled a
lead by more than three points, until the Hawks led by four at
22-18, when they went on a 3-2 run to take the set. Flaherty had 10
assists in the set.
In the fourth set, the Hawks enjoyed a 13-8 lead, which was
erased when the Golden Knights took the lead at 17-16. The game was
extended past 25 points when the Golden Knights won at 26-24, to
send the match to a fifth and final set. Elliot totaled five kills,
while Gustavson tallied four. Margaret
Tereschuk (Mission Viejo, Cal.) had eight digs.
The fifth set was won by Saint Anselm by a 15-12 final. The
Hawks never trailed in the game, largely in part to Kylie
Kozlowski's (Quincy, Mass.) four kills.
In the match for the Hawks, Flaherty recorded 46 assists, while
Tereschuk defensively had 21 digs. Gustavson had 11 kills and 12
digs, and Tencza has 13 kills and nine digs.
The Hawks will be back in action tomorrow at 12:00 pm to take on
Le Moyne College at
home.
