MANCHESTER, N.H. - The Saint Anselm men's ice
hockey team capped off a twin-bill at Sullivan Arena this evening
with a 4-2 victory over the University of New England
Nor'easters. New England jumped to an early 2-0 lead, but the
Hawks stormed all the way back, scoring four unanswered goals to go
3-0 this week. The win lifts the Hawks to 6-4 (4-3 ECAC
East), while the Nor'easters dropped to 1-10 (0-7 ECAC East).
Jonathan Grandinetti (Ottawa, Ont.) put up the
first goal for the Nor'easters at 12:52 in the first period, lacing
a slap shot past Hawk goaltender Kevin Fairweather (Woburn,
Mass.). The rest of the period was quiet, but just
48 seconds after the puck drop in the second period, Mike
Tiano (Dover, N.H.) stormed out of the faceoff with a fast
break, and knocked in the rebound of his own breakaway shot, for a
quick 2-0 Nor'easter lead.
Plagued by penalties, the Nor'easters lost their momentum, and
the Hawks took charge, as Tucker Mullin (Andover,
Mass.) knocked in Paul Snell's (Groton,
Mass.) rebound at 5:43 during a power play for the Hawks'
first goal. Close to 10 minutes later, Coleman Noonan
(Norfolk, Mass.) capitalized on a 5-on-3 situation,
flipping in the rebound of Ryan Holley's (Owings,
Md.) slap shot, to knot the score at two headed into the
final period.
At 4:10 in the third, captain Nick Wheeler (Nashua,
N.H.) caught the puck from a faceoff and took it all the
way down the ice to net an unassisted breakaway goal and give the
Hawks' their first lead of the game. In the final minute, the
Nor'easters sent in an extra attacker, and though they came
dangerously close to scoring, Timothy King (Weymouth,
Mass.) won the puck near the blue line and dropped off an
empty-net goal in the last second of the game, for a final score of
4-2.
Kevin Fairweather picked up his fourth win of the season with 31
saves in tonight's complete game. Mike Roper (New
Glasgow, N.S.) stopped 39 shots and allowed the first
three goals in 59:15 minutes in the net to earn his fifth
loss. The Hawks return to action next Friday, when they
travel to Colchester, Vt., to take on the Saint Michael's College
Purple Knights. The game, which is scheduled to begin at 7:00
pm, will count towards the Hawks' record in both the ECAC East and
the Northeast-10.
