Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Hawks Overcome Early Deficit for Draw at St. Mike's

MANCHESTER, N.H. - The Saint Anselm men's ice hockey team travelled to Colchester, Vt., this evening to take on the Saint Michael's College Purple Knights.  The Hawks rallied back from an early 3-0 deficit to tie the Purple Knights, 6-6.  Freshmen Tucker Mullin (Andover, Mass.) and Timothy King (Weymouth, Mass.) each scored three points in the game.  The tie counts towards the teams' records in both the ECAC East and Northeast-10, thus the Hawks are now 6-4-1 (4-3-1 ECAC East, 2-0-1 NE-10), and the Purple Knights are 2-8-2 (1-5-2 ECAC East, 1-1-1 NE-10).

The Purple Knights opened the scoring at 6:23 in the first period, when Glenn Belmore (Cornwall, Ont.) drove in a shorthanded goal. One minute later, Reave MacKinnon (Winnipeg, Man.) slapped in an even-strength goal for a quick 2-0 lead.  At 14:43, Tim Geverd (Horsham, Pa.) knocked in a power-play goal to put the Purple Knights up 3-0.

At 15:20 in the first, the Hawks mounted their comeback, as Tucker Mullin set up Timothy King for the Hawks' first goal.  Twenty-three seconds into the second period, team captain Coleman Noonan (Norfolk, Mass.) netted his 10th goal of the season off the opening faceoff on a power-play.  The goal was the 25th of Noonan's career.  Four minutes later, Belmore shot in his second goal of the game during a 5-on-3 power play, to keep the Purple Knights up 4-2.  At 12:35 in the second, Paul Snell (Groton, Mass.) netted the Hawks' third goal to put the Hawks back within one heading into the final period of regulation.

At 7:09 in the third, Matt Rigtrup (Upper Montclair, N.J.) scored an unassisted goal for the Purple Knights, to extend their lead to 5-3.  However, the Hawks' responded quickly, going on a three-goal run, to take their first lead of the game.  Timothy King scored first, at 8:10, followed by two power-play goals by Brendan Carroll (Duxbury, Mass.) and Ryan Butler (Owings, Md.).  Tim Geverd then knocked in the game-tying goal at 15:43 in the third period to send the game into overtime.  In the penalty-ridden five minutes of overtime, each team got two shots off, but neither was able to score, as the game ended in a 6-6 draw.

The two teams incurred a total of 40 penalties, 19 on Saint Anselm and 21 on Saint Michael's, for 96 minutes.  Tonight's 19 penalties are the most the Hawks have committed this century.  Tonight's 96 penalty minutes are the most assigned since December 2, 2006, when the Hawks combined with the Tufts Jumbos for 118 penalty minutes.  Saint Michael's 21 penalties are the most by a Hawk opponent since January 2, 2006, when Franklin Pierce committed 25.  Finally, the 40 combined team penalties are the most in a Hawk hockey game since January 27, 2004, when Saint Anselm and Southern New Hampshire combined for 47.

The Hawks outshot the Purple Knights 46-31.  Goaltender Mike Dizgun (Kirkland, Que.) made 40 saves in the complete game for the Purple Knights.  Kevin Fairweather (Woburn, Mass.) made nine saves in 15:20, allowing the first three goals, and Alex Wyse (Amherst, N.Y.) made 16 saves in 49:40 minutes of relief, giving up the last three goals and earning the tie.

The Hawks return to action tomorrow evening, when they take on the first-place Norwich University Cadets in an ECAC East Conference game beginning at 4:00 pm.
