West Haven, Conn. (January 23) -- Led by 14
points from Hakeem Williams (Spring Valley, N.Y.),
the Saint Anselm men's basketball team held off New Haven late for
its fifth straight victory by a 57-56 final. The win is the sixth
straight in the series for Saint Anselm, with the last New Haven
win coming in 1991.
The lead changed hands four times over the last 4:41 of the
game, including New Haven taking a 56-55 lead with 1:38 left on a
layup from Cassius Chaney. After a missed
opportunity for Saint Anselm by senior Greg Vetrano
(Andover, Mass.) and two missed shots from New Haven, the
Hawks got the rebound and called timeout.
Out of the timeout, Vetrano scored on a runner in the lane to
put the Hawks 57-56 with 16 seconds remaining. After New Haven
called timeout with 10.8 on the clock, the Chargers inbounded the
ball into the backcourt for the potential game-winning shot.
However, Vetrano poked the ball away from New Haven's
Darryl Greene as he drove the lane and the ball
was pulled in by Pat Luptowski (Keene, N.H.) for
the Hawks. A missed Saint Anselm free throw late gave the Chargers
one final chance with 2.3 seconds left, but that last-ditch attempt
was off as the Hawks picked up their fifth straight victory.
Williams led the Hawks with 14 points, along with a 13-point
effort from Vetrano. Robert Jamerson led three
Chargers in double figures with 16 points.
With the win, the Hawks improve to 12-6 overall and 8-5 in the
Northeast-10, while the Chargers fall to 2-15 overall and are just
2-11 in league play. Saint Anselm is back in action on Tuesday
night, as the team hosts Assumption for a 7:30 p.m. start at
Stoutenburgh Gym.
