Rutherford, N.J. (January 13) -- After rallying
from a 10-point halftime deficit to briefly take the lead early in
the second half, the Saint Anselm women's basketball team couldn't
hold off Felician as the Hawks dropped a 63-50 final to the Falcons
on Wednesday night.
Over the last 4:49 of the first half, Felician put together an
8-0 run and took a 29-19 lead into the halftime break. Saint Anselm
came out with an 11-0 run to open the second half, using a pair of
threes by Epiphany Smith (Springdale, Ark.) and
one by Jen Gureckis (Nashua, N.H.) to pull within
one. Kellianne Josephsen (West Caldwell, N.J.)
nailed a pair of free throws with 16:23 left and the Hawks took a
brief 30-29 lead.
With the Hawks leading 33-32 just minutes later, a 14-0 Felician
run put the game out of reach for Saint Anselm. After the Hawks
ended the run with 11:07 left, the Falcons pushed the lead to as
many as 19 and never led by fewer than 11 over the remainder of the
contest.
Smith led the Hawks with 13 points, along with seven rebounds
and five assists, while junior Courtney May (Lakeville,
Mass.) ended up with 10 points. Quay
Baskerville and Renelle Wyke each had 14
points for the Falcons, along with 13 points by Janelle
Biamonte.
With the loss, the Hawks drop to 6-9 overall, while Felician
improves to 9-3 overall on the season. Saint Anselm is back in
action on Saturday afternoon, hosting Saint Rose for a 1:30 p.m.
start at Stoutenburgh Gym.
