Hawks Seize Fifth Win in 2-1 Defeat of NYIT Bears

MANCHESTER, N.H. - The Saint Anselm women's soccer team hosted the Bears of the New York Institute of Technology this afternoon in non-conference play. The Hawks, who are currently ranked seventh in the NSCAA East region, defeated the Bears by a score of 2-1, to nab their fifth win of the season.  All 18 of the healthy Hawks saw playing time in today's victory.

The Hawks didn't waste any time, scoring their first goal within seven minutes of the opening whistle.  Sophomore Teresa Vercollone (Pembroke, Mass.) won the ball in the backfield and dribbled it into the box to set up senior Mary Kate Heavey (Medfield, Mass.).  Heavey laced a hard shot out of the goalkeeper's reached, but it just missed and ricocheted off the post.  Junior Jennifer Pearl (Stoughton, Mass.) got the rebound and sent the ball up into the top-left part of the net, to give the Hawks an early 1-0 lead.

Shortly after the goal, Coach Wallis switched up the majority of the Hawks' lineup, including sending Jennifer Davis (Norwood, Mass.) into the net for her second time this season.  The rest of the half was uneventful, but at 47:32, two and a half minutes into the second period, a Hawk foul in the box gave Megan Emanuelo (Deer Park, N.Y.) a chance to tie the game with a penalty kick.  She laced a tough shot up into the right side of the net, out of Davis' reach, to knot the score at one apiece.

The next 35 minutes went back and forth, and the momentum seemed to be heading into overtime when, at 82:24, junior Erika Sartor (Andover, Mass.) set up sophomore defender Jillian DaSilva (East Taunton, Mass.) who hooked in a slicing shot off her left foot, to give the Hawks a 2-1 victory.

The Hawks outshot the Bears 16-5 in the game, 10-2 in the second half alone.  NYIT goalkeeper Kathryn Miller (Doylestown, Pa.) had eight saves in the game, Jacqueline Cooney (Braintree, Mass.) had three in her 54:17 playing time, and Davis had none in 35:43.  With the win, the Hawks improve to 5-3-1 (4-2 NE-10) while the Bears drop to 1-5 (0-0 ECC).

The Hawks return to action on Saturday afternoon, September 26th, as they travel to Albany, N.Y. to take on the No. 3 College of Saint Rose Golden Knights.  The competition is slated for 2:00 pm.
