MANCHESTER, N.H. - On a cloudy fall afternoon
at Melucci Field, the Saint Anselm women's soccer team hosted the
Purple Knights of Saint Michael's College for a Northeast-10
Conference match-up. The Hawks, who are currently ranked
seventh in the NSCAA East, fell to the Purple Knights by a score of
1-0. The Knights came into today's game looking for their
first conference win, and are now 2-6 overall and 1-4 in the
Northeast-10.
The Hawks controlled the ball for the majority of the first
half, outshooting the Purple Knights 7-2, but they were unable to
get past goalkeeper Ashleigh Adams (Milton, Vt.),
who kept the score tied at zero through the end of the half.
However, just over 10 minutes into the second half, at 55:21,
Purple Knight sophomore Teal Bryan (North Yarmouth,
Maine) passed the ball to Cassie Crockett
(Gilmanton, N.H.) who laced a hard shot towards the right
side of the net. Hawk keeper Jacqueline Cooney
(Braintree, Mass.) made a spectacular diving save to keep
the ball out of the net, and, while still on the ground, she kept
the ball from rolling into the net with her feet. However,
before Cooney could get to her feet and regain control of the ball,
Crockett capitalized on the situation and knocked the ball up and
over Cooney to put the Purple Knights up 1-0.
The rest of the game was quiet, and while the Hawks had a few
key opportunities, Crockett's goal proved enough to put the Purple
Knights on top, giving them their first conference win of the
season. The Hawks outshot the Purple Knights 12-6.
Ashleigh Adams had seven saves and Cooney had three. The game
marks the first win for Saint Michael's over Saint Anselm since
October 9, 2004. The Hawks are 15-7-3 all-time against the Purple
Knights.
The Hawks (4-3-1, 4-2 NE-10) return to action on Thursday,
September 24th, when they host the New York Institute of Technology
Bears in their first match-up in history. The non-conference
game will be held at Melucci Field beginning at 4:00 pm.
