Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Hawks Sink Dolphins, Tab Fourth Conference Win

MANCHESTER, N.H. -- The Saint Anselm women's soccer team returned from their two-week road trip this afternon on a crisp fall day at Melucci Field.  The Hawks took on the Dolphins of Le Moyne College for their first home game in two weeks, and, behind the strong offense of Teresa Vercollone (Pembroke, Mass.), the Hawks came out with a 3-1 victory. Vercollone scored two goals of the Hawks' three goals in the game.

The Hawks got on the board early in the first half, as sophomore Teresa Vercollone drove the ball from midfield down the left side and passed it in to Keara Dolan (Madison, Conn.) in the box.  She then tapped it back to Vercollone, who laced a hard shot into the top of the net to give the Hawks an early 1-0 lead.

The Hawks held onto their lead for the rest of the first half, but at 56:15, 11 minutes into the second period, Rachel Farneti (Marcellus, N.Y.) sent a corner kick into the box to Alex Dwyer (Syracuse, N.Y.).  Hawk goalkeeper Jacqueline Cooney (Braintree, Mass.) came up to make the save, but the ball got loose and Megan O'Shea (East Syracuse, N.Y.) recovered it and scored the empty net goal to knot the score at one apiece.

However, the game wasn't tied for long, for less than four minutes later, at 59:55, Jennifer Pearl (Stoughton, Mass.) set up a perfect pass from midfield to Vercollone in the box, who dribbled past the last defender and the goalie and netted the ball to regain the Hawks' lead.  20 minutes later, freshman Jackie McEvoy (Spring, Tex.) sent a free kick from just outside the box to sophomore Hillary Sanacore (Wakefield, R.I.), who scored her first career goal and solidified the Hawks' lead at 3-1.

The Hawks outshot Le Moyne 16-10, including 9-2 in the first half.  Dolphin goalkeeper Melissa Stevens (Camillus, N.Y.) had seven saves in the game, and Cooney had six.  With the win, the Hawks improve to 4-2-1 (4-1, NE-10) and the Dolphins fall to 4-2-2 (1-2-2, NE-10).  The Hawks look for their fifth conference win on Tuesday, September 22nd as they host the Purple Knights of Saint Michael's College at Melucci Field, beginning at 4:00 pm.
