MANCHESTER, N.H.
- The Saint Anselm men's soccer team dropped their
fourth straight game this afternoon in a Northeast-10 Conference
match against the Assumption College Greyhounds. Senior
Richard Simmonds (Hooksett, N.H.) scored his first
goal of the season in the 2-1 loss.
The Hawks got off to a quick start, as Richard Simmonds
converted a corner kick from Keesen Howe (Norwich,
Conn.), at just 2:50 into the game, to put the Hawks up
1-0. The goal snapped Assumption goalkeeper Brandan
Sullivan's (Halesite, N.Y.) 467:27 minute scoreless streak
dating back to last October. Sullivan had not given up a goal
since October 18, 2008 when he let one get by him in a 1-1 tie
against Felician.
Unfortunately, the Hawks did not hold on to the lead for long as
Greyhound forward Stephen Blaisdell (Peabody,
Mass.) netted the first Assumption goal at 11:22 to tie
the game at one a-piece. Austin Prete (Glastonbury,
Conn.) and Jeffrey Swan (Fairfield,
Conn.) recorded assists on the play.
Five minutes later, at 16:47, a Hawk foul inside the box gave
Blaisdell a second opportunity to score, this time via penalty
kick. The junior forward laced a curving shot into the right
corner of the net to give the Greyhounds the lead 2-1, and as it
turned out, that would be all they would need. Throughout the
rest of the first half, Blaisdell had three more big chances, but
the Hawks' defense kept him off the board.
In the second half, it was the Hawks' turn for a penalty
kick. Just after the 63 minute mark, Simmonds stepped into
the box looking for his second goal of the day. He drilled a
tough shot to the right side, but Sullivan made a diving save which
ricocheted off his gloves towards Joshua Rocco (North
Reading, Mass.) who took the rebound shot but just missed
wide. As the clock ran down, the Hawks had a few more
opportunities, but they could not find a way past Sullivan, and
eventually fell 2-1.
Hawk goalie John Corridan (Holliston, Mass.)
had four saves in the game and Sullivan had just one. The
Greyhounds improve to 4-1 (2-0, NE-10) and the Hawks fall to 0-4
(0-2, NE-10). The Hawks look for their first win of the
season this Sunday, September 13th when they host the
Queens College Knights at Melucci Field beginning at 1:00 pm.
