Manchester, N.H. (September 13) -- In an evenly
played game, the Saint Anselm men's soccer team came up just short
in a 1-0 loss to Queens College in non-conference play on Sunday
afternoon at Melucci Field. Saint Anselm is now 0-5 on the season,
while Queens improves to 4-2.
After a scoreless first half, the Hawks nearly scored early in
the second as they had a pair of players in behind Queens netminder
Ivan Salame. That effort went just wide though and
the game continued scoreless until the 36:19 mark. Frank
Alesci ended up in a one-on-one situation with Saint
Anselm goalie Eric Moriarty (Center Harbor, N.H.)
and poked in the lone goal of the game for the 1-0 lead.
Queens had two other opportunities in the second half as well as
Danny Stoker got past Moriarty and his touch shot
just hit the right post. At the 18:26 mark, Akinyode
Dele missed a penalty kick for the Knights as well to keep
the Hawks within striking distance. For the game, Queens held a
slim 12-11 advantage in total shots.
Moriarty made four saves in the loss for Saint Anselm, while
Salame turned aside three shots. This was the first career start
for Moriarty in goal.
Saint Anselm returns to action on Tuesday, September 13th as the
Hawks host C.W. Post for a non-conference game beginning at 4 p.m.
