Colchester, Vt. (April 28) -- Fifth-seeded
Saint Anselm rallied from a 9-7 halftime deficit to upset No. 4
seeded Saint Michael's by a 14-13 final on Tuesday afternoon in the
Northeast-10 Tournament Quarterfinals on Duffy Field at Doc Jacobs
Sports Complex.
With the tournament win, the second in Saint Anselm school
history, the Hawks advance to take on top-ranked Le Moyne College
on Friday in the Northeast-10 Tournament Semifinals. The win also
avenges a 9-7 loss by the Hawks at Saint Michael's last week in the
final road game of the regular season.
For Saint Anselm, senior All-Conference performer Matt
Surette (Wakefield, Mass.) led the Hawks with four goals,
including the game winning score with 1:20 left in the fourth
quarter. Junior Jeff Dunkle (Exeter, N.H.) also
scored four goals in the win, while senior All-America candidate
Chris Murphy (Winchester, Mass.) added a pair of
goals. Four other Hawks added single goals as the Hawks pulled off
the victory. Sophomore goalie Dan Flynn (Wakefield,
Mass.) made eight saves in goal to pick up the victory.
The Purple Knights jumped out to a 6-3 lead after one period and
held the 9-7 halftime advantage. Saint Anselm pulled to within
11-10 after three quarters and took a 13-12 lead late in the game.
After the Purple Knights tied the contest at 13-13 with under two
minutes on the clock, Surette countered with his 30th goal of the
season and third game-winning score to give the visitors the win. A
Saint Michael's penalty with 50 seconds left sealed the win for the
Hawks.
Saint Anselm is now 8-6 overall, while Saint Michael's ends the
season at 7-7 overall.
