(April 22)-The Saint Anselm College baseball team
fell to the Owls of Southern Connecticut 8-2 Wednesday afternoon in
NE-10 action at Sullivan Park. The loss drops the Hawks to 13-24
overall and 9-13 in conference play, while the win improves the
Owls to 17-17 overall and 12-8 in league contests.
The Owls hit the board quickly in the top of the first, on a
grand-slam from first baseman Ryan Geffert (Plymouth,
Penn.) to take a 4-0 lead.
Southern Conn. added another run in the top of the third on an
RBI single Karl Derbacher (Northford, Conn.) for
the 5-0 advantage.
In the top of the fifth Derbacher continued to produce as he
ripped an RBI triple and later scored on a passed ball to extend
their lead to 7-0.
In the bottom of the eighth Saint Anselm crossed the plate on an
RBI double from senior shortstop Ben Gunn (Vineyard Haven,
Mass.) scoring Melvin Perdue (Jonesboro,
Georgia) to cut the lead to 7-1. The Hawks would add
another on an RBI single from freshman Dan DeCoste
(Chelmsford, Mass.) scoring Gunn to make it 7-2.
The Owls would add another run in the top of the ninth on an RBI
groundout from Kevin Bowerman (West Haven, Conn.)
for the 8-2 final.
Saint Anselm starter Sean Hayden (Haverhill,
Mass.) went five innings allowing five runs and five hits,
while Southern Conn. hurler Ed Bethke (Branford,
Conn.) went the distance in the win allowing two earned
runs.
The Hawks return to action tomorrow, April 22, as they will
travel to Southern Conn. for a 3:30 game.
