Hawks Drop Doubleheader to 1st Place Ravens

Rindge, N.H. (April 18)-The Saint Anselm College baseball team dropped an NE-10 doubleheader to Franklin Pierce 7-0 and 7-2 Saturday afternoon at Dr. Pappas Field. The day drops the Hawks to 12-22 overall and 8-11 in conference play, while the wins improve the Ravens to 22-14 overall and 13-5 in NE-10 games to solidify their first place standing.

In game one, the Ravens took a 4-0 lead in the second inning led by RBI hits from Steve Carr (Nahant, Mass.) and Jose Macias (Bronx, N.Y.).

Franklin Pierce would add to their lead in the seventh and eighth innings powered by Mike Dowd's (E. Bridgewater, Mass.) home-run to left center for the 7-0 final.

Saint Anselm was led by Dan DeCoste (Chelmsford, Mass.) and Eric Baca (Franklin, N.H.) with two hits apiece in the loss.

Raven's starter Tom Cote (Swanzey, N.H.) went eight innings scattering six hits allowing no runs and striking out 10 for his sixth victory of the season. Hawks hurler John Healy (Cranston, R.I.) went seven innings allowing five earned runs and striking out four in the loss.

The Ravens jumped out to a 1-0 lead in game two, on an RBI double from Kevin Rivers (Bristol, Conn.). Franklin Pierce continued to apply pressure by adding three runs in the third, led by Carr's two-RBI single to take a 4-0 lead. In the fourth, Rivers added another RBI in the score sheet, this time with a single, to take a 5-0 advantage.

After the Ravens took a 7-0 lead in the sixth, the Hawks had their best inning in the top of the eighth on a two-RBI single from DeCoste. The rally would end as the Hawks would hit into a double play to end the inning and be retired in the ninth for the 7-2 final.

Bret Bartlett (Duxbury, Mass.) took the loss for the Hawks going the first three innings and allowing four runs on seven hits. Franklin Pierce starter Alex Szymanski (Londonderry, N.H.) went eight innings allowing the two Hawk runs and seven hits in his third win of 2009.

Both teams return to action tomorrow, as they will face-off at Sullivan Park for a 1 p.m. start.
