Hawks Shutout by Chargers 6-0

West Haven, Conn. (April 14)-The Saint Anselm College baseball team was shutout by the University of New Haven Chargers 6-0, led by starting pitcher T.J. Phelan's (Patchogue, N.Y.) one-hit shutout, on Tuesday afternoon at Frank Vieira Field. The loss drops the Hawks to 12-17 overall and 8-6 in NE-10 play, while the win propels the Chargers to 13-13 overall and 9-9 in league contests.

The Chargers wasted little time scoring as they had a 5-0 lead after two innings of play. In the bottom of the 1st inning Jimmy Rivas (Toa Baja, Puerto Rico) knocked in Tom Rombilus (Monroe, Conn.) from third base to put New Haven up 1-0.

In the 2nd, New Haven added four more runs, the first of which came on Kyle Pettoruto's (Andover, Mass.) sacrifice fly. Kyle Bombace (N. Branford, Conn.) came to the plate next and doubled over the head of the left fielder. A wild pitch brought in the third run of the inning and Evan Okon's (Bellmore, N.Y.) RBI single to right field made the score 5-0.

The Chargers added another in the bottom of the sixth, on an RBI single from Rombilus for the 6-0 final.

The Hawks managed their lone hit of the contest in the top of the second on Ben Waldrip's (Medford, Mass.) single up the middle.

Waldrip started the game for the Hawks on the mound going 1.2 innings and allowing five runs on six hits in the loss. Reliever Joe Latino (Holden, Mass.) pitched the final 6.1 innings allowing only one run on four hits. Phelan went the distance for the Chargers allowing the lone single and striking out nine in his second win of 2009.

The Hawks return to action tomorrow, April 15th, as they will host Bentley University for a 3:30 p.m. start.
