Saint Petersburg, Florida (March 4)-The Saint
Anselm College baseball team was defeated by the Tritons of Eckerd
College 12-4, Wednesday night at Turley Athletic Complex. The loss
drops the Hawks to 2-5 on the season, while the win improves the
Tritons to 10-7 on the year.
Eckerd started the scoring, putting up four runs on five hits in
the bottom of the second inning. The inning was highlighted by
third baseman Mike Sinicola's
(Warwick,
R.I.) two-RBI single off Hawk
pitcher Kyle Lavin
(Shelton,
Conn.).
The Tritons would continue to add pressure by adding two runs in
the bottom of the third and a run in the bottom of the fifth for a
7-0 lead.
In the top of the seventh, Saint Anselm would cross the plate on
an RBI single from freshman first baseman Ben Waldrip
(Medford,
Mass.) scoring TJ Murphy
(Reading,
Mass.) to make it 7-1.
Eckerd would then explode for five runs in the bottom of the
seventh, led by second baseman Matt Abraham's
(Worcester,
Mass.) two-RBI single, to extend
their lead to 12-1.
In the eighth inning the Hawks added a run on an RBI groundout
from senior shortstop Ben Gunn (Vineyard Haven,
Mass.) scoring freshman infielder
Jeff Criscuolo
(Durham,
Conn.) for Saint Anselm's second
run of the game.
The top of the ninth would add two more runs for the Hawks on a
RBI double from Waldrip scoring right fielder Jimmy
Garrigan (Plymouth,
Mass.) to make it 12-3. After
Waldrip advanced to third on a groundout, freshman Tim
Griswold (Holmdel,
N.J.) recorded a RBI scoring
Waldrip on a groundout for the 12-4 final.
Lavin went three innings giving up four earned runs and striking
out one batter in the loss, while Triton starter Chris
Ayral (Oldsmar,
Florida) went five innings giving
up only one hit and no runs earning his first victory of the
season.
The Hawks will return to the field tomorrow, with a 6 p.m. game
against Rollins College.
