Winter Park,
Florida (March 5)-The Saint
Anselm College baseball team was shutout by the Tars of Rollins 6-0
on Thursday night at Alfond Stadium. The loss drops the Hawks to
2-6 on the year, while the win makes Rollins 10-6 in 2009.
Rollins crossed the plate in the bottom of the second when
senior left fielder Jesse More
(Maitland,
Florida) ripped a RBI double off
of Hawk senior captain Nick Barese
(Braintree,
Mass.) to give the Tars a 1-0
lead.
More wasn't finished as he would come up again in the fourth
inning and lace an RBI triple to give the home team a 2-0 lead. The
very next batter for Rollins, Eugene Martinez
(Miami,
Florida), hit a sac-fly to the
centerfielder to score More and extend the Tars lead to 3-0.
In the bottom of the sixth, Martinez would get another sac-fly
RBI to make it 4-0 Rollins.
After the Tars added two more in the bottom of the seventh,
Barese was relieved by Hawk freshman Joe Latino
(Holden,
Mass.) who was helped out of a
jam on a diving stop by senior shortstop Ben Gunn (Vineyard
Haven, Mass.), who turned the six-four-three double play
to end the inning leaving Saint Anselm trailing 6-0.
Barese would take the loss for the Hawks going six and a third
innings allowing nine hits, six runs and striking out one. Going
six strong innings for the Tars was Matt White
(Bellingham,
Mass.) giving up only five hits
and no runs in the win. Latino went an inning and two-thirds
allowing only one hit and no runs in relief of Barese.
At the plate the Hawks were led by TJ Murphy
(Reading,
Mass.) who went two-for-four and
was the only Saint Anselm player to have a multi-hit game.
Saint Anselm returns to the diamond tomorrow, as they will play
a non-conference game against Bentley hosted by Rollins College at
3 p.m.
