Manchester, N.H. (March 28) -- After falling by
a 6-3 final in game one, Saint Anselm picked up a 5-2 win over
Assumption in the second game to come away with a split on Saturday
afternoon at Sullivan Park.
In game one, the Hawks took a quick 1-0 lead on an RBI single by
Ben Waldrip (Medford, Mass.) that scored
Tim Murphy (Reading, Mass.). Assumption held a 3-2
lead after three innings and added another pair in the sixth to
make it a 5-2 contest. The Hawks chipped away to make it 5-3 in the
sixth on an RBI single to left by Ben Gunn (Vineyard Haven,
Mass.)that scored Matt Sucharewicz (Peabody,
Mass.). Assumption scored once in the top of the ninth to
account for the final. Senior Nick Barese (Braintree,
Mass.) took the loss for the Hawks, going six innings
while scattering nine hits and three earned runs with three
strikeouts. Four Hawks had multi-hit games, led by a 2-for-4
showing by Waldrip with a pair of runs scored.
In the second game, the two teams battled into extra innings at
2-2 before the Hawks struck in the top of the 10th. Saint
Anselm loaded the bases in the inning with one out before
Eric Baca (Franklin, N.H.) singled up the middle
for a pair of runs and the 4-2 lead. Jimmy Garrigan
(Plymouth, Mass.) scored from third later in the inning to
account for the 5-2 final. Tim Cooney (E. Bridgewater,
Mass.) picked up the victory after pitching three innings
of one-hit relief and striking out a pair.
Saint Anselm is now 7-11 overall and 3-2 in the Northeast-10,
while Assumption stands at 11-10 overall and 5-3 in the league.
