N.H. (February 3)-The Saint
Anselm College men's ice hockey team, behind senior tri-captain
Tom Kerwin's
(Whitman,
Mass.) game-winning overtime
goal, moved to a perfect 3-0 in NE-10 play with a 5-4 overtime win
over the Ravens of Franklin Pierce Tuesday night at Sullivan Arena.
The win improves the Hawks to 6-10-1 overall, while the loss drops
the Ravens to 5-12-2 overall and 1-2 in NE-10 action.
The Ravens took an early lead on a goal from junior forward
Phil LaBreck
(Thornton,
N.H.) to give Franklin Pierce the
1-0 lead just over three minutes into the first period. The Hawks
would add two power-play goals to take the lead. At 6:10 sophomore
forward/defenseman Nick Wheeler
(Nashua,
N.H.) evened the contest at one
with his sixth lamplighter of the season. Just over three minutes
later, the Hawks took the lead for the first time in the game on a
goal by Kerwin off helpers from Zachary Feiden
(Delray,
Florida) and Seth
Goodrich (Salisbury,
Vt.) to make it 2-1.
In the second period Franklin Pierce would fight back as they
would score in the seventh and 17th minute on goals by LaBreck and
Steve Della-Calce (East
Stroudsburg,
Penn.) to give the Ravens the
lead again at 3-2. Saint Anselm fought back when senior-tri captain
Joe Fernald (Braintree, Mass.) evened the game at
three off passes from Mike Nunzianto
(Guilford,
Conn.) and John Hennessey
(Westwood,
Mass.) heading into the third
period.
In the third period Wheeler would notch his second goal of the
night off assists from Coleman Noonan
(Norfolk,
Mass.) and Ryan Butler
(Arlington,
Mass.) to put the Hawks up 4-3
just past the halfway point. The Ravens would tie the game again on
a goal from Coursen Schneider (Stony
Point,
N.Y.) thirty seconds later to
force the game into overtime.
In the overtime period the Hawks wasted no time as Kerwin scored
his second goal of the game off a rebound from Butler and Fernald,
30 seconds in the stanza, to lift Saint Anselm to a 5-4 overtime
NE-10 victory.
Sophomore goaltender Alex Wyse
(Amherst,
N.Y.) made 24 saves in the
win for Saint Anselm, while Ravens netminder Ben Siok
(Holden,
Mass.) set aside 40 shots in
the loss.
The Hawks return to action, Friday, February 6th, as they will
travel to Babson for a 7 p.m. start.
