Manchester, N.H. (November 1) -- Saint Anselm's
Justin Colella (Wilmington, Mass.) curved a shot
into the upper right corner with 9:20 remaining in the first half
for the eventual game winner as the Hawks knocked off top-seeded
Southern New Hampshire by a 1-0 final in the Northeast-10
Tournament Quarterfinals. The Hawks now advance to the league
semifinals and will take on Southern Connecticut in their next
game.
The two teams went back and forth in the opening half before
senior Paul Kilday (Marshfield, Mass.) one touched
a pass to Colella at the top of the box, which Colella hooked into
the upper right corner for the 1-0 lead. In the opening minutes of
the second half, the Hawks survived a serious offensive push by the
Penmen, but were able to keep the score at 1-0. Kevin
Woods hit the crossbar with a shot for Southern New
Hampshire with 18:40 left, which would prove to be their best
scoring opportunity.
The Hawks held on for the 1-0 victory, their first win over
Southern New Hampshire since September 12, 2001, to snap an
eight-game losing streak to the Penmen. This also marks the first
time since the tournament format eliminated first-round byes in
2000 that the No. 8 seed defeated the No. 1 seed in the opening
round.
Saint Anselm netminder Eric Moriarty (Center Harbor,
N.H.) made five saves for the win, while Sean
Lambert played 89:41 for Southern N.H. and didn't make a
save before being red carded with 19 seconds remaining in the game.
Saint Anselm is now 7-8-3 overall, while Southern New Hampshire
drops to 13-4-2 overall. The Hawks are back in action on Wednesday
as the team travels to Southern Connecticut for a semifinal matchup
who's start time is still to be determined.
