Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Seniors Score Three Goals in Their Final Home Game

MANCHESTER, N.H. - The Saint Anselm men's soccer team hosted the University of New Haven Chargers this afternoon in their final home game of the season.  Prior to the game, the Hawks' five seniors were honored for their contributions to Saint Anselm over the past four years.  The senior class combined for three goals and one assist to end their careers at Melucci Field with a bang.  The Hawks defeated the Charger 4-1, lifting them to 5-7-3 (5-4-2 NE-10) while the Chargers fall to 1-13 (0-11 NE-10).

The Hawks didn't waste any time as just seven and a half minutes into the game sophomore Keesen Howe (Norwich, Conn.) passed the ball to senior Tyler Sangster (Duxbury, Mass.) in the box who dribbled past goalkeeper Jonathan Creem (Naugatuck, Conn.) and knocked the ball in to put the Hawks up 1-0.  Twenty minutes later, at 28:09, Charger Joel Rodriguez (Willingford, Conn.) sent the ball to Nick Dionne (Meriden, Conn.) who laced a crossing shot into the right corner of the net to tie the game at one.

However, the game did not remain tied for long, for just over a minute later, at 29:30, Tyler Sangster sent a throw-in to senior Paul Kilday (Marshfield, Mass.) in the box, who shot it past Creem to regain the Hawks' lead.  Just six seconds later, the Hawks drove back down the field and sophomore Joshua Rocco (North Reading, Mass.) headed the ball past the last defender to give the Hawks a quick 3-1 lead.

The score remained 3-1 through the remainder of the half, but early in the second half, at 58:55, Tyler Sangster won the ball in the box and dribbled past the Chargers' last defender to knock in the Hawks' fourth goal of the game. Sangster scored a career-high five points in today's game, the most among Hawks in a single game this season.    He now leads the Hawks with 10 points in 2009.

The Hawks broke the team's all-time single-game shots record of 27, set in 2005 against Bentley University, sending 31 towards the net in today's game, while the Chargers got off just 11.    New Haven starting goalkeeper Jonathan Creem had 10 saves, and J.J. Comeau (Wallingford, Conn.), who came in for the last 10:38 of the game, had one save.  Hawk senior John Corridan (Holliston, Mass.) had four saves in his final appearance at Melucci Field, and freshman Eric Moriarty (Center Harbor, N.H.) had none in his 4:40 minutes of relief.

The Hawks return to action next Saturday, October 24th to take on the American International College Yellow Jackets in the second-to-last game of the season beginning at 6:00 pm.  The Hawks will closeout their season the following Wednesday afternoon at Bentley University.
