MANCHESTER, N.H. - The Saint Anselm men's
soccer team travelled across town this evening to take on the
first-place No. 5 Southern New Hampshire University Penmen.
After 110 minutes of the play, the game came to a close in a 1-1
tie. The Hawks are now 4-7-3 (4-4-2, NE-10) and the Penmen
are 11-1-2 (8-0-2, NE-10).
The Penmen struck first, as Kevin Woods (Alyth,
Scotland) sent a cross-pass from the left flag to
Adrian Schippers (Ashby, Mass.) who headed the
ball past Hawk goalkeeper Eric Moriarty (Center Harbor,
N.H.) at 16:10 to put the Penmen up 1-0. The Penmen
held onto their lead for the remainder of the half, but at 53:01,
sophomore Keesen Howe (Norwich, Conn.) sent a free
kick to senior Paul Kilday (Marshfield, Mass.) in
the box, who knocked the ball in and knotted the score at
one.
The Penmen had a key opportunity with three minutes left in
regulation, as Mark Cotton (Londonderry, N.H.)
took a shot and a second rebound shot, but Moriarty made two great
saves to send the game into overtime. After two overtime
periods, the score remained tied at one, and the game resulted in a
draw.
The Penmen outshot the Hawks 23-8. Eric Moriarty had nine
saves in the game, and his opponent Sean Lambert (Rehoboth,
Mass.) had just one. The Hawks return to action this
Saturday, October 17th to host the University of New Haven Chargers
in their final home game of the season. Be sure to arrive
before kickoff at 3:00 pm, when the Hawks' seniors will be
recognized for their many accomplishments.
