MANCHESTER, N.H. - The Saint Anselm men's
soccer team hosted the Stonehill College Skyhawks this afternoon in
a battle for the final playoff spot in the rapidly-approaching
Northeast-10 postseason. In a very evenly-played match, the Hawks
came out on top with a 1-0 victory to lift them to 4-7-2 (4-4-1
NE-10), while the Skyhawks fell to 7-5-1 (3-5-1 NE-10). The
Hawks, who have not lost to the Skyhawks since October 14, 2004,
extend their winning streak to five consecutive victories against
Stonehill.
The first half was quiet, just nine shots taken between the two
teams (five for the Skyhawks and four for the Hawks). Both
teams also committed six fouls each and the Skyhawks took three
corner kicks, while the Hawks took just one. However, at
67:07, halfway through the second period, Stonehill defender
Kevin Moroney (Medway, Mass.) made the difference
in the game, as he accidentally knocked the ball past his own
goalkeeper to score the only goal of the game-for Saint Anselm.
The Skyhawks narrowly outshot the Hawks 15-13, and both teams
shot nine on target. Freshman goalkeeper Eric
Moriarty (Center Harbor, N.H.) picked up his third win for
the Hawks, stopping nine shots en route to his second career
shutout. Skyhawk keeper Brandon McFarlane (Norwich,
Conn.) had eight saves in the game, and allowed just the
one unconventional goal.
The Hawks return to action on Wednesday, October 14th, as they
travel across town to take on the first-place Southern New
Hampshire Penmen under the lights at 7:00 pm. Be sure to
