Manchester, N.H. (January 9) - Colby used a
four-goal second period to lead the Mules to a 6-3 victory over
Saint Anselm on Friday night in non-conference play at Sullivan
Arena.
Colby tallied the lone goal of the opening period as the Mules
tallied a shorthanded score just 4:30 into the period as
Chris Buonomo (Edison, N.J.) notched his second
goal of the season. The Hawks held a 7-3 advantage in shots on
goal, but were unable to find the goal in the first.
The Mules took advantage of an early Saint Anselm penalty in the
opening minutes of the middle period as Michael Doherty
(Lynnfield, Mass.) scored on the power play at 3:52 for a
2-0 Colby lead. The goal was his team-leading fourth of the season.
Colby added to the lead at the 8:33 mark as Blake Dressen
(Wayzata, Minn.) fired the puck towards the next from the
corner and Jared Crittenden (Fairport, N.Y.)
tipped it past Saint Anselm goalie Alex Wyse (Amherst,
N.Y.) for a 3-0 edge.
Saint Anselm fought back just moments later as senior
Joe Fernald (Braintree, Mass.) scored a
shorthanded goal and it was 3-1 with just over 10 minutes
remaining. Colby answered back with its second power-play goal of
the game though just 15 seconds later and regained control at 4-1.
The Mules added an even-strength score a minute later by
Chris Talbert (Hinesburg, Vt.) as he took a pass
from Dressen for his first career goal and the 5-1 margin. The
Hawks were not done though in a high-scoring second period as
Coleman Noonan (Norfolk, Mass.) scored with 4:29
left and Paul Snell (Groton, Mass.) added a goal
with 1:13 remaining in the stanza to pull the hosts back to within
5-3 after two periods.
Colby added a goal late in the third period by Buonomo, his
second goal of the game, for the 6-3 final.
Wyse made nine stops for the Hawks as he got the start.
Brian Dowd (Hamburg, N.J.) came in midway through
the second period and made two saves in four minutes for the Hawks.
Pat Gallagher (Framingham, Mass.) made eight saves
in the final 30 minutes for Saint Anselm. Cody McKinney
(Weston, Fla.) turned aside 34 shots in the victory.
With the loss, the Hawks drop to 3-4-1 overall, while Colby
improves to 4-5-1 after its second straight victory. Saint Anselm
is back in action on Saturday afternoon as the Hawks host Bowdoin
for a 3 p.m. start at Sullivan Arena.
