Manchester,
N.H. (January 10) - Coleman Noonan's
(Norfolk,
Mass.) third period game-winning
goal and two-assist effort led Saint Anselm College past the Polar
Bears of Bowdoin College for a 3-2 victory on Saturday afternoon at
Sullivan Arena.
The win improves the Hawks to 4-4-1 on the year, while the loss
drops Bowdoin to 6-4-1 on the campaign.
The Polar Bears his the scoreboard first, when junior defenseman
Mike Corbelle
(Byfield,
Mass.) scored off of passes from
Brandon Reich
(Montvale,
N.J.) and Erik Olson
(Edina,
Minn.) with just over four
minutes left in the first period. The Hawks were out shot 23-5 as
Hawk senior goalie Pat Gallagher
(Framingham,
Mass.) set aside 22 shots in the
first stanza.
In the second period, Saint Anselm tied the game on a power-play
goal from sophomore forward Nick Wheeler (Nashua,
N.H.) six and a half minutes into the period. Noonan was
credited with the assist. Bowdoin took the lead back midway through
the period when Kyle Hanson
(Calgary,
Alberta) took a pass from
Thomas Herd (Los
Angeles,
Calif.) to beat Gallagher for a
2-1 lead. The Hawks were again out shot in the period 14-7 as
Gallagher made 35 saves through two periods.
The third period was all Hawks as Wheeler added his second goal
of the game midway through the third period on assists from Noonan
and senior captain Joe Fernald
(Braintree,
Mass.) to tie the game 2-2. A
minute and a half later Noonan's unassisted goal lifted the Hawks
to a 3-2 victory.
The Hawks were out shot 51-25 but Gallagher made an astounding
49 saves pick up his second victory of the year, while
Richard Nerland
(Calgary,
Alberta) stopped 22 shots to fall
to 4-3-1 on the year.
The Hawks return to the ice Friday, January 16th, as they will
host Wesleyan (Conn.) University at 7 p.m. at Sullivan Arena.
