Manchester, N.H. (January 31)-The Saint Anselm
College men's ice hockey team snapped a six-game losing streak with
a 4-2 NE-10/ECAC East victory over the Purple Knights of Saint
Michael's Saturday afternoon at Sullivan Arena. The win improves
their record to 5-10-1 overall, 4-8-1 in the ECAC East and 2-0-0 in
NE-10 play while the loss drops the Purple Knights to 6-9-2 on the
season.
The Hawks wasted little time getting on the scoreboard as
sophomore forward Ryan Butler (Arlington, Mass.)
took a pass from Coleman Noonan (Norfolk, Mass.)
and Paul Snell (Groton, Mass.) and put it past
Purple Knight goaltender Tyler Bilton (Penticton, British
Columbia) to give Saint Anselm the 1-0 lead less than two
minutes into the game. Saint Michael's fought back as Ryan
Mero (Peekskill,
N.Y.) beat Saint Anselm netminder
Alex Wyse
(Amherst,
N.Y.) to even the game at one at
5:24 in the first period.
In the second stanza, Saint Anselm scored the lone goal of the
period on the five-on-three power-play. Snell took a pass from
Noonan and beat Bilton to give the Hawks the 2-1 lead at the 13:22
mark. The Hawks out-shot Saint Michael's 18-10 in the period to
take the lead into the final period.
Sophomore forward/defenseman Nick Wheeler
(Nashua,
N.H.) scored off assists from
Snell and Noonan at the 4:44 mark in the third period. The Purple
Knights would slice the lead in half on a goal from Ryan
Nest (Gansevoort,
N.Y.) to make it a 3-2 game. Hawk
senior-captain Joe Fernald
(Braintree,
Mass.) added an empty-netter with
1:10 left on the clock to put the game out of reach and give the
Hawks the 4-2 win.
Wyse made 38 saves to pick up his third win of the season, while
Bilton and Brendan Rimmer
(Newbury,
Mass.) combined to give up three
goals and make 32 saves in the losing effort.
The Hawks hit the ice again, Tuesday, February 3rd, as they will
host in-state rival Franklin Pierce University for a NE-10 game at
7:30 p.m.
