Hawks Win Second Straight With 77-67 Victory

Manchester, N.H. (January 29) -- Led by 27 points from Thomas Baudinet (Watertown, Conn.), the Saint Anselm men's basketball team defeated the University of New Haven by a 77-67 final on Thursday night at Stoutenburgh Gym.

Three-pointers were the story for Saint Anselm in the opening period as the Hawks rained down eight three's, including four from sophomore Pat Luptowski and two each from Baudinet and John Tello (Ridgefield Park, N.J.). The lead went as high as 17 points at 36-19 with 4:46 remaining in the half after a three from Luptowski. New Haven answered though with a pair of three's from D.J. Sackmann (Pequannock, N.J.) to key a 14-5 run to cut the lead to 41-33 at the halftime break. Cassius Chaney (Old Saybrook, Conn.) led all scorers with 15 points, while Luptowski scored 14 points for the Hawks.

The Hawks pushed the lead back to double digits at 50-39 early in the half before an 8-0 run, led by five points from Chaney, pulled the visitors back within 50-47 and forced a Saint Anselm timeout. The Hawks answered with an 8-0 run of their own to put the lead back to 11 at 58-47.

The back and forth affair continued as the Chargers were back within five at 61-56 after a Chaney jumper. Saint Anselm answered back though with a quick spurt though, capped by a layup from Giovanni Carenza (East Hanover, N.J.), for a 67-56 advantage with under five minutes left. New Haven got back within six points once more, but could get no closer as the Hawks swept the regular-season series from the Chargers.

Baudinet led three Hawks in double figures with 27 points, while Luptowski posted 14 and Carenza 12. Chaney led all players with 34 points to go along with seven rebounds.

With the win, Saint Anselm has now won two straight to improve to 12-7 overall and an 7-7 in Northeast-10 play, while New Haven is now 7-13 on the season and 5-10 in the league. The Hawks are back in action on Saturday afternoon as the team hosts Assumption for a 3:30 p.m. start at Stoutenburgh Gym.
