Manchester, N.H. (January 17) -- Saint Anselm
pulled within four points late in the second half, but Le Moyne
held off the Hawks for a 66-59 win on Saturday afternoon in
Northeast-10 men's basketball action at Stoutenburgh Gym. The win
was Le Moyne's fourth straight in the all-time series.
Behind 11 early points from Pat Luptowski (Keene,
N.H.), the Hawks jumped out to a quick 22-12 lead with
7:46 left in the opening half. Saint Anselm held a nine-point lead
with 3:54 on the clock before the Dolphins closed the period on a
13-2 run to take a 31-29 advantage into the break.
In the second half, the Hawks came out firing and after a pair
of three-pointers from John Tello (Ridgefield Park,
N.J.) and a trifecta from Greg Vetrano (Andover,
Mass.), the hosts held a 40-35 lead just 2:20 into the
period. A 9-3 spurt though, capped by a jumper from freshman
Christopher Johnson, gave the Dolphins the lead
for good at 44-43 with 12:57 left. Saint Anselm got to within four
with 1:20 left before dropping their fourth straight contest.
Tello led the Hawks with 16, along with 13 from Luptowski and 11
points from Vetrano. Branimir Zeko (Mississauga,
Ontario) had a team-high 12 rebounds. Laurence
Ekperigin finished with 23 points and a career-best 19
rebounds, along with 18 points and 11 rebounds from Phil
Barnes and an 11-point, 11-rebound double-double from
Kevin Roth.
Saint Anselm, now 10-5 overall and 6-5 in the Northeast-10, is
back in action on Tuesday night as the Hawks travel to Saint
Michael's for a 7:30 p.m. start.
