Manchester, N.H. (January 14) - Saint Anselm
couldn't overcome 13 three-pointers from Merrimack as the Hawks
dropped a 72-51 final to the Warriors in Northeast-10 women's
basketball action on Wednesday night at Stoutenburgh Gym.
After Merrimack jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead, the Hawks came
back with a 16-2 run to make it a 16-9 game with 11:58 left in the
opening period. The Warriors, who average nearly 30 three-point
attempts per game, then began to heat up from the outside. The
visitors took the lead on a three-pointer by Casey Miller
(Fairbanks, Alaska) with 10:38 remaining and knocked down
six more threes before the half for a 49-22 lead at the break. The
Warriors knocked down 10 three-pointers in the period, led three
each by Miller and Sarah Benischek (Shrub Oak,
N.Y.). Megan Howard (St. Paul, Minn.) led
the Hawks with 16 points in the first period.
After Merrimack pushed the lead up to as many as 30 points in
the second half, the Hawks clawed their way back to within 18 with
6:27 left before dropping the 21-point final.
Howard ended up with her 10th double-double of the season and
her seventh in her last nine games. Howard set a career high with
her 31-point effort, to go along with her 15 rebounds. Three
Warriors finished in double figures, led by 17 points each from
Miller and Amanda Shannon (North Andover, Mass.).
With the loss, Saint Anselm falls to 3-12 overall and 1-9 in the
Northeast-10, while Merrimack improves to 4-10 overall and 3-6 in
league play. The Hawks are back in action on Saturday afternoon as
the team plays host to Le Moyne College. Game time is set for 1:30
p.m. at Stoutenburgh Gym.
