Manchester, N.H. (January 17) -- Saint Anselm
cut the lead down to five points late in the second half before
dropping a 65-52 final to visiting Le Moyne in Northeast-10 women's
basketball play on Saturday afternoon at Stoutenburgh Gym.
Le Moyne jumped out to an early nine-point lead before the Hawks
rallied back to within 19-14 with 7:53 left in the half following a
jumper from freshman Haley Poupore (Malone, N.Y.).
A 12-2 spurt over the next three and a half minutes pushed the lead
out to 15 at 31-16 and the Dolphins eventually took a 38-22 lead
into the halftime break.
In the second half, the Dolphins led by as many as 19 points
early in the period before the Hawks put together a run. Led by 11
second-half free throws by senior Justine Lyons (Reading,
Mass.) and 12 second-half boards by Courtney May
(Lakeville, Mass.), the Hawks pulled to within five points
at 52-47 with just over five minutes left in the game. Le Moyne
pushed the lead back to double digits and withstood one more Saint
Anselm rally as the Dolphins came away with the 13-point win.
Lyons finished with 19 points, including 15-of-17 from the free
throw line. Her 15 free throws were just two shy of the Saint
Anselm single-game record for free throws made. Poupore posted a
career-high 17 points, while May posted a 10-point, 17-rebound
double-double in the loss. Vanessa Holden was the
lone Dolphin in double figures with a 12-point, 12-rebound
performance. In all, 11 different players found their way into the
scoring column for Le Moyne.
Saint Anselm falls to 3-13 overall and 1-10 in league play,
while Le Moyne is now 9-9 overall and 6-7 in the Northeast-10. The
Hawks are back in action on Tuesday night as the team travels to
