Manchester, N.H. (September 28) - Trailing by a
2-0 margin early in the second half, the Saint Anselm men's soccer
team rallied for a 3-2 overtime win over UMass Lowell on Sunday
afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference play.
The River Hawks jumped on the board with just 6.4 seconds left
in the first half when Stephen Potcner (Wilmington,
Mass.) scored his second goal in as many games for the 1-0
lead.
UMass Lowell opened the second half with some solid scoring
chances, but they were turned away by Saint Anselm goalkeeper
John Corridan (Holliston, Mass.). The River Hawks
did make it 2-0 in the second though when Matt Dubois
(Dracut, Mass.) intercepted a pass, dribbled past Corridan
and scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season.
Just moments later, Jeff Dell'Orfano (North Andover,
Mass.) scored on a deflected shot for his team-best fourth
goal of the season and pulled the Hawks to within 2-1 with 31:24
left. The Hawks kept up the pressure and notched the equalizer with
24:40 left, off the foot of senior forward Sam Lamptey
(Worcester, Mass.). Lamptey took a pass from junior
Paul Kilday (Marshfield, Mass.) and scored just
inside the far post for his third goal of the season.
In overtime, Dell'Orfano took advantage of a River Hawk turnover
and beat the UML goalie to the far post for his second goal of the
game and the 3-2 victory.
Corridan made 10 saves, while UMass Lowell goalkeeper
Ryan Richards (Holden, Mass.) turned aside six
shots.
With the win, the Hawks improve to 3-5-1 overall and 1-2-1 in
Northeast-10 play, while the River Hawks drop to 3-2-3 overall and
2-1-2 in the league. Saint Anselm is back in action on Wednesday
afternoon as the Hawks host defending NCAA national champion
