Worcester, Mass. (September
27) -- Despite a 149-yard rushing effort by freshman
quarterback Marc Wilson (Farmington, Conn.), the
Saint Anselm football team dropped a 16-7 final to Assumption
College in rain-soaked Worcester on Saturday afternoon.
In the first half, the Greyhounds took the opening kickoff and
converted it into three points as Zack Okolowitcz
(Cranston, R.I.) booted a 31-yard field goal with 10:39
left in the first quarter for the early 3-0 advantage. Assumption
added to that lead with a fake field goal attempt on fourth down
from the 24-yard line as D.B. Haseotes (North Attleboro,
Mass.) found a wide open Joey Fabiano (Westwood,
Mass.) on the near side for an uncontested touchdown. The
extra-point attempt was blocked and it was 9-0 Greyhounds with
11:57 remaining in the first half.
Saint Anselm got on the board on the next possession to cut into
the Assumption lead. Joe Tran (Quincy, Mass.) got
the Hawks into Assumption territory with a 23-yard rush on the
first play of the drive. Tran capped off the 10-play, 72-yard drive
with a 12-yard scamper up the right side to make it 9-7 Greyhounds
with 8:42 on the clock.
The Hawks took the ball in the second half and went for it on
4th down and 2 at midfield, but the pass by Wilson that was
intended for Marcel Bouie (Stone Mountain, Ga.)
fell incomplete and Assumption took over. The Greyhounds proceeded
to rattle off a eight-play, 53-yard drive that was capped off by a
three-yard TD run to the far pilon by Herb Woodard (Salem,
N.J.) with 7:32 left in the third quarter for the 16-7
lead.
The lone scoring chance in the fourth quarter came with 2:40
left as a 31-yard field goal attempt by Okolowitcz went wide left
and the Hawks took over on their own 14 yard line, trailing 16-7.
Wilson led the Hawks on offense with 149 yards on the ground and
was 10-for-21 for 87 yards passing. Bryant Lane
(Norwood, Mass.) was the team's leading receiver
with four receptions for 48 yards.
Woodard finished as the leading rusher for Assumption with 105
yards on 24 rushing attempts and one touchdown. Ratacik was
9-for-14 passing for 114 yards.
Defensively, the Hawks were led by senior captain Bill
Fletcher (Gardner, Mass.) with eight tackles and 1.5
sacks.
Saint Anselm falls to 0-4 overall and 0-2 in the Northeast-10,
while Assumption now stands at 1-3 overall and 1-1 in the
Northeast-10. The Hawks are back in action on Saturday, October 4
as the team hosts American International for a 1 p.m. start on
Homecoming.
