Manchester, N.H. (September 10) - The Saint
Anselm men's soccer team dropped a Northeast-10 Conference match to
the University of New Haven 3-2 at Melucci Field Wednesday
afternoon. The loss drops the Hawks to 2-3-0 overall and 0-2-0 in
conference, while the win improves New Haven to 2-2-0 overall and
1-1-0 in the Northeast-10.
The Chargers scored first, when Anthony Romano
(Plainview,
N.Y.) stole the ball from the
Hawk defenders and fired it past Saint Anselm goalie Hunter
Wootten (Westhampton
Beach,
N.Y.) to make it 1-0. Ten minutes
later, Jessey Fernandez
(Hanson,
Mass.) took a lead pass from
Romano and made the score 2-0 Chargers before the half.
In the second half, the New Haven struck first again as Romano
stole the ball from the Hawks defenders and passed it to
Steven Gennuso
(Middletown,
Conn.) cutting in front of the
net to beat Wootten to make it 3-0.
The Hawks hit the scoreboard late,
when Michael Searson
(Avon,
Conn.) took a pass from
Tyler Sangster
(Duxbury,
Mass.) and put it past Charger
goalie James Hilaire
(Jacmel,
Haiti). In the games 80th minute,
the Hawks cut the lead in half when Keesan Howe
(Norwich,
Conn.) took a lead pass from
Sangster to make the game 3-2. A few last minute shots by the Hawks
went wide as the Chargers went on for the 3-2 victory.
Next up for Saint Anselm is a neutral site game against
Dominican College at Merrimack on Saturday, at noon. New Haven is
also back in action on Saturday at home against C.W. Post at 3:30
p.m.
