Manchester, N.H. (August 29) - Junior
Mary Kate Heavey (Medfield, Mass.) scored a pair
of goals to lead Saint Anselm to a 4-1 victory over visiting Holy
Family in non-conference women's soccer action at Melucci Field.
The game was the season opener for both teams.
The Hawks got on the board early as Heavey took a pass from
midfield from sophomore Keara Dolan (Madison,
Conn.) and buried a shot into the upper left corner of the
net. She added to the lead 20 minutes later as she beat a Holy
Family defender and scored into the bottom right corner for the 2-0
advantage.
The Tigers cut the lead in half just under 10 minutes into the
second half as freshman Lindsay Fisher (Oakford,
Pa.) fired a long shot that just tipped off the fingertips
of Saint Anselm goalkeeper Micaela Smith (Andover,
Mass.).
Saint Anselm added to the scoring with 17:46 remaining in the
game as Erika Sartor (Andover, Mass.) buried a
point-blank shot just below the crossbar for the 3-1 lead.
Kayla Pitney (Needham, Mass.) capped it off with
under two minutes left for the 4-1 final with her first goal of the
season
Smith finished the game with two saves before being relieved
midway through the second half by sophomore Jacqueline
Cooney (Braintree, Mass.). Cooney made two saves in her
time in net, including one from point-blank range. Freshman
Gina Mansi (Washington Township, N.J.) turned
aside eight shots in the loss.
Saint Anselm now sits at 1-0-0 overall, while Holy Family is
0-1-0. The Hawks return to action on September 5th as the team
travels to Molloy College for a non-conference game.
