Smithfield, R.I. (April 5) -- Riding a
three-run, three-hit fourth inning, Saint Anselm's baseball team
took a 3-1 win over Bryant at the Bryant Baseball Complex. The win
is the Hawks' second in a row, improving them to 7-14, 3-7
Northeast-10. The loss drops Bryant to 17-12, 7-3 in league play.
Bryant jumped on the board in the third inning with a single
run. Jason Alexander (Simsbury, Conn.) singled in
Taylor Ferguson (Charlton, Mass.), who had reached
base on a single earlier in the inning.
Dave Wirkus (Orange, Conn.) drew a leadoff walk
and Adam Hussey (Danvers, Mass.) singled to open
the fourth inning to put runners on the corners. Matt Stone
(West Roxbury, Mass.) followed with a single to plate
Wirkus and tie the game at one. A Ryan O'Rourke
(Norwood, Mass.) groundout to second base scored Hussey,
and Stone scored thanks to an Eric Baca (Franklin,
N.H.) single the next at-bat, putting the Hawks up 3-1.
Both teams were kept off the board after the fourth inning, with
both starting pitchers hurling a complete game. Neil Hesek
(Northboro, Mass.) was masterful on the hill for the
Hawks, picking up his first win of the season. Hesek finished the
game allowing just five hits and one run with one strikeout.
Eric Loh (Old Greenwich, Conn.) was the tough-luck
loser for Bryant, allowing just four hits, three earned
runs, and striking out seven.
The Hawks and the Bulldogs are back in action tomorrow, as the
Hawks once again travel to Bryant, this time for a twin-bill
starting at Noon at the Bryant Baseball Complex.
