Bulldogs Earn Sweep of Hawks

Smithfield, R.I. (April 6) -- A day after beating Bryant 3-1, the Saint Anselm baseball team dropped a pair of games to Bryant on Sunday, scoring only two runs between both games. The Hawks dropped the first game, 2-1, then dropped the back-end of the twin bill, 4-1, with both games played at the Bryant Baseball Complex. With the pair of losses, the Hawks drop to 7-17, 3-9 Northeast-10. The wins improve Bryant to 19-12, 9-3 in league play.

GAME ONE
Bryant struck first, scoring a lone run in the third inning. Nick Campbell's (Raynham, Mass.) single down the left field line scored Jason Alexander (Simsbury, Conn.) to put the Bulldogs on the board.

Bryant then made the lead 2-0 in the fifth inning. Campbell got on with a bunt single, stole second, and scored later in the inning on a Pat O'Connor (Mattapoisett, Mass.) double.

The Hawks were held off the board until the eighth inning. After Ben Gunn (Vineyard Haven, Mass.) singled to open the inning, he moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt. Nick Moreau (Manchester, N.H.) then reached on an error from the third baseman, with Gunn scoring on the play. It was the only run the Hawks put on the board though, dropping the first game 2-1.

Tim Ryan (Milton, Mass.) pitched well for the Hawks in the loss, going six innings, scattering nine hits, and picking up one strikeout. Eric Simm (Salem, N.H.) came in and pitched two scoreless innings in relief, allowing just one hit while striking out two. David O'Brien (Whitman, Mass.) picked up the win for the Bulldogs, going 7.1 innings allowing just three hits and one unearned run while striking out two. Eric Polvani (Medfield, Mass.) picked up the save, throwing a perfect ninth inning with one strikeout.

GAME TWO
Bryant put single runs on the board in the first and second innings to go up 2-0 early on the Hawks. A Campbell double in the first put him on second with one out, as he scored later in the inning on an error. Taylor Ferguson (Charlton, Mass.) then scored in the second inning on an error from the right fielder.

The Hawks cut the deficit in half in the fourth, when an RBI single from Tim Murphy (Reading, Mass.) scored Matt Stone (West Roxbury, Mass.).

The Hawks did not score for the rest of the game though, as the Bulldogs added two insurance runs in the top of the ninth to seal the 4-1 victory.

Kyle Lavin (Shelton, Conn.) made his first start of the season for the Hawks, going eight innings, allowing six hits and allowed just two unearned runs in the tough luck loss. Brett Almeida (Fairhaven, Mass.) picked up the win for the Bulldogs, scattering seven hits and allowing one run in 6.1 innings of work. Polvani again picked up the save for his second of the day and his sixth of the season, with the only runner of the inning reaching base on error.

The Hawks are back on the field on Tuesday, traveling to American International for a 3:30 p.m. game.
