Pleasantville, N.Y. (April 3) -- The Saint
Anselm baseball team split a doubleheader on Thursday afternoon at
Pace. The Hawks dropped the first game, 4-0. The Hawks then bounced
back to take a 7-6 victory in game two. With the split, the Hawks
now stand at 6-14, 2-7 Northeast-10. The Setters lose their perfect
Northeast-10 record with the loss in game two, but still stand at
16-10, 6-1 in conference play.
GAME ONE
Pace's starting pitcher, Zach Dayton (North Falmouth,
Mass.), held the Hawks to just six hits and no runs in 8.2
innings, walking two and striking outs six en route to his second
victory of the season. Frank Luongo (West Harrison,
N.Y.) made his team-leading 10th appearance in relief,
striking out the only batter he faced in the ninth.
Pace jumped on the scoreboard early, taking a 2-0 lead in the
first inning. Saint Anselm's starting pitcher, Matt Stone
(West Roxbury, Mass.), struggled with control in the early
going. Chris Spatkowski (Bristol, Conn.) walked to
open the game and moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt.
Jack Cawley (Bronx, N.Y.) was then hit by a pitch
to put runners on second and third, as Vinny Dammann
(Mullica Hill, N.J.) walked to load the bases with one
out. Aaron Zrenda (Niantic, Conn.) then walked to
bring in the first run of the game. Neil Ross (Cortland
Manor, N.Y.) then hit a sacrifice fly to center to bring
in Cawley.
Stone settled in for the next few innings though, as he held the
Setters to just the two runs in the first until the sixth inning.
Pace added a single run as J.J. Conrad's (Hamburg,
N.J.) ground ball to third was mishandled, allowing
Chris Brown (West Kingston, R.I.) to score
unearned.
The Setters added another single run in the seventh as Zrenda's
ground out brought in Andre Liscinsky (Trumbull,
Conn.), who had singled earlier in the inning.
Stone allowed just four hits over seven innings in the loss,
with four walks and three strikeouts. Jimmy Garrigan
(Plymouth, Mass.) threw a perfect eighth inning with a
pair of flyouts and picked up an assist on a bunt attempt.
Nick Moreau (Manchester, N.H.) finished the
game 2-for-3 with a pair of singles to lead the Hawks offensively.
T.J. Murphy (Reading, Mass.), Adam Hussey
(Danvers, Mass.), Ben Gunn (Vineyard Haven,
Mass.), and Steven Panza (Watertown,
Mass.) all had a hit apiece, as Murphy had the only extra
basehit for the Hawks, a double.
GAME TWO
Led by a balanced attack from the Saint Anselm
lineup, the Hawks picked up a 7-6 victory in game two of the
doubleheader. Moreau again led the offensive attack going 2-for-4.
Pace scored first again in the second game, taking a 1-0 lead in
the first inning. Liscinsky singled up the middle with one out and
Cawley's bunt single followed to put runners on first and second.
Zrenda then singled a batter later to bring in Liscinsky.
The Hawks exploded for five runs in the fourth inning though to
take a 5-1 lead. After Gunn walked to open the inning,
Melvin Purdue (Jonesboro, Ga.) singled to put
runners on first and third with none out. Conor Amirault
(Haverhill, Mass.) walked to load the bases. Evan
Kelleher (Haverhill, Mass.) then singled to tie the game
at one, bringing in Gunn. After a Pace pitching change, Moreau
singled to bring in Purdue. Dave Wirkus (Orange,
Conn.) then walked to bring in Amirault. Hussey then
grounded out to third, but Kelleher scored on the play, giving the
Hawks a 4-1 lead. Matt Sucharewicz (Peabody,
Mass.) polished off the scoring in the inning with a
sacrifice fly, bringing in Moreau.
Pace responded with a four run inning in the top of the fifth to
tie the game back up at five, but the Hawks came back with two more
runs in the seventh. After Ryan Gargan (Byfield,
Mass.) reached on an error and Gunn walked to put runners
on first and second to open the inning, Murphy moved both runners
up a base with a weak ground out to the right side. Amirault
reached on a fielder's choice, as the shortstop tried to cut down
Gargan at the plate, but the throw was off the mark, allowing
Gargan to score. Kelleher then brought in Gunn with a sacrifice fly
to center.
Pace added another single run in the eighth, but the Hawks held
on for the 7-6 victory. Left-hander Mike Fantini
(Haverhill, Mass.) got the no-decision for the Hawks,
allowing eight hits and five runs over six innings with two walks
and five strikeouts. Mike O'Rourke (Norwood,
Mass.) picked up the win in relief, going two innings
allowing one run on two hits with a walk.
David Giarrusso (Cranston, R.I.) came in to
pick up his fourth save of the season throwing a perfect ninth
frame with a foul pop out, a ground out, and a fly ball to left.
With the save, Giarrusso broke the Saint Anselm all-time career
save record, picking up the seventh save of his career.
The Hawks are back in action on Saturday, traveling to Bryant
for a doubleheader scheduled to start at Noon.
