Manchester, N.H. (April 18) - The Saint Anselm
baseball team dropped a 5-3 final to UMass Lowell on Friday
afternoon at Sullivan Park. The loss drops the Hawks to 12-21, 8-13
in Northeast-10 play. The win is UMass Lowell's seventh in a row,
improving their record to 18-16, 13-5 in conference play.
The River Hawks threatened right away in the first inning, as
Tim Manton (Swansea, Mass.) stole second and third
after a lead-off walk put him on. With two outs, Manton's attempt
to steal home was thwarted when Eric Baca (Franklin,
N.H.) jumped out in front of the plate to make the tag.
The Hawks took a 1-0 lead in the third when Ben Gunn
(Vineyard Haven, Mass.) tripled to right-center, bringing
in Nick Moreau (Manchester, N.H.), who had reached
on an error to open the inning.
Nick Barese (Braintree, Mass.) continued to
hold the River Hawks in check until the seventh inning. A
Peter Wolstenholme (Fall River, Mass.) single
brought home two runs, and a Sean Burns (Colchester,
Vt.) ground out brought in another run, giving the River
Hawks a 3-1 lead.
The River Hawks added two more runs in the ninth as
Anthony Santos (Chelmsford, Mass.) doubled to left
field to put UMass Lowell up 5-1.
The Hawks proceeded to load the bases though in the bottom of
the ninth. A Gunn walk brought home Evan Kelleher
(Haverhill, Mass.) and Moreau scored on a past ball to put
the tying run at second and the go-ahead run at the plate with one
out. Ryan Gargan (Byfield, Mass.) struck out to
put two outs up on the board, and Baca flied out to shallow center
to end the threat.
Dan White (Southboro, Mass.) improved his
record to 3-3 on the season, throwing eight innings allowing one
unearned run on seven hits with a walk and seven strikeouts.
Derek Anderson (Dracut, Mass.) threw the ninth
inning for the River Hawks in a non-save situation with his
team-leading 15th appearance, allowing two runs.
Nick Barese (Braintree, Mass.) took the tough-luck
loss for the Hawks, throwing seven innings and allowing three runs
on five hits with three strikeouts to drop his record to 3-2.
Eric Simm (Salem, N.H.) tossed the final two
innings for the Hawks, allowing two runs on two hits with three
strikeouts.
The Hawks are back in action tomorrow, traveling to Assumption
for a twin-bill. First pitch is scheduled for Noon.
