Manchester, N.H. (April 16) - The Saint Anselm
baseball team dropped a non-conference match-up against Merrimack
on Wednesday afternoon at Sullivan Park, 11-3. The loss drops the
Hawks to 12-19. The win improves the Warriors to 13-17.
Merrimack scored three runs in the first inning to take a 3-0
lead. Matt Cataldo (Tyngsborough, Mass.) hit a
sacrifice fly to bring in Brendan Pyburn (Peabody,
Mass.), who opened the inning with a triple. On a ground
ball back to the pitcher from Mike Andre (Medford,
Mass.), Jeff Bercume (Leicester, Mass.)
scored. Ryan Shepard (Andover, Mass.) then score
on a past ball.
The Warriors tacked on four runs in the third. A Shepard single
brought in Pyburn, who had tripled for the second time to lead off
an inning in the game. Andre's single brought in Bercume, while a
Bob McCarthy (Chelmsford, Mass.) walk brought in
Shepard. Mike Savastano (Salem, N.H.) then picked
up an RBI on a misplayed ball to center, scoring Andre.
The Warriors picked up another run in the fifth to extend the
lead to 8-0 and a pair of runs in the seventh made it 10-0. A
Savastano ground out brought in Andre in the fifth. A Savastano
walk and a Mike Dooling (Milford, Conn.) hit by
pitch brought in the two runs in the seventh.
The Hawks got on the board in the eighth with a trio of runs. A
Nick Moreau (Manchester, N.H.) walk and a
Mike Fantini (Haverhill, Mass.) double put runners
on second and third with no outs. T.J. Murphy's (Reading,
Mass.) double brought in both runners. An Eric
Simm (Salem, N.H.) groundout to second brought in Murphy
later in the inning.
The Warriors tacked on one more in the ninth, as Dooling's
double brought in Kevin Allen (Wilmington,
Mass.).
Kyle Lavin (Shelton, Conn.) suffered the loss
for the Hawks, while Ryan McNeil (Lynnfield,
Mass.) picked up the win for the Warriors.
The Hawks are back in action tomorrow, heading to Bentley for a
3:30 p.m. start.
