Venice, Fla. (March 6) -- The baseball team
dropped its second-straight game Thursday afternoon, falling to
Assumption 7-4 in a non-conference battle. The loss drops the Hawks
to 2-4 on the season and on their Southern swing, while the win
improves the Greyhounds to 4-3 on the season.
The Hawks struck for a lone run in the top of the second, as
Ryan O'Rourke (Norwood, Mass.) and Matt
Sucharewicz (Peabody, Mass.) singled to open up the
inning. After a successful sacrifice bunt from Evan
Kelleher (Haverhill, Mass.), both runners moved into
scoring position. Nick Moreau (Manchester, N.H.)
singled home Ryan O'Rourke to put the Hawks up 1-0.
Assumption came back with five runs in the bottom of the fourth,
capped off by a three-run homer from Devon Murphy
(Waterbury, Conn.), to put the Greyhounds up 5-1. The
Hawks scored two in the top of the sixth to bring it back within
two, as Sucharewicz belted his second homerun of the season, a solo
shot with one out in the inning. After Kelleher doubled to right
field, Moreau singled to left-center to bring in Kelleher.
The Hawks got within one with another single run in the top of
the seventh. After back-to-back walks to Melvin Purdue
(Jonesboro, Ga.) and Ben Gunn (Vineyard Haven,
Mass.) opened the inning, Ryan Gargan (Byfield,
Mass.) successfully sacrificed both runners up a base.
However, the Greyhounds cut down Purdue on the next play.
Sucharewicz's single brought home Gunn for Sucharewicz's second RBI
of the game.
The Greyhounds added two insurance runs in the bottom of the
eighth though to secure the 7-4 victory.
Nick Barese (Braintree, Mass.) went the
distance on the hill for the Hawks, dropping his record to 1-1.
Barese allowed seven hits and three walks, striking out five on the
afternoon only allowing two earned runs.
The Hawks are back in action tomorrow, playing Bentley at 1 p.m.
in Saint Leo, Fla.
