Saint Leo, Fla. (March 7) -- Four different
pitchers combined to shutout Bentley on Friday afternoon at
Southard Stadium on the campus of Saint Leo University.
Andrew Long (Peabody, Mass.) picked up his first
win of the season going six innings only allowing three hits and
two walks. The win improves the Hawks to 3-5, while the loss
dropped Bentley to 0-8.
A pitcher's duel through the first four and half innings, there
was no score until the Hawks picked up the lone run of the game in
the bottom of the fifth. After Evan Kelleher (Haverhill,
Mass.) and Eric Simm (Salem, N.H.)
singled to open up the inning, Kelleher was cut down at third on a
fielder's choice. Simm moved up to third after an error and
Adam Hussey (Danvers, Mass.) brought in the only
run of the game on the next play.
The Hawks only mustered five hits on the day, with Dave
Wirkus (Orange, Conn.), Matt Stone (West Roxbury,
Mass.), and Ryan O'Rourke (Norwood,
Mass.) picking up the other three hits for the Hawks
besides Kelleher and Simm.
Three Saint Anselm relievers held the Greyhounds to just one
baserunner over the final three frames. Kyle Lavin
(Shelton, Conn.) threw a scoreless seventh, while
Mike O'Rourke (Norwood, Mass.) fired a scoreless
eighth with a pair of strikeouts. David Giarusso (Cranston,
R.I.) came in to pick up the save, his second of the
season, with no hits and a strikeout to his record in the ninth.
The Hawks return to the field tomorrow with a pair of games. The
Hawks take on Bentley again at noon tomorrow, while the Hawks will
meet with American International at 3 p.m.
