St. Petersburg, Fla. (March 5) -- The baseball
team made-up its game with Eckerd postponed last night
on Wednesday afternoon. Led by a four-for-four, five
RBI performance from Matt Sucharewicz (Peabody,
Mass.) capped off by a first inning grand slam, the Hawks
held on for the 10-9 victory over Eckerd. The Hawks avenged a 13-9
loss suffered to the Tritons on Sunday afternoon. The win improves
the Hawks to 2-3, while the loss drops the Tritons to 8-11.
The Hawks put seven runs up in the first inning, highlighted by
Sucharewicz's grand slam. Adam Hussey (Danvers,
Mass.) and Dave Wirkus (Orange, Conn.)
both singled to open up the game to put runners on first and
second. After Ben Gunn (Vineyard Haven, Mass.)
walked to load the bases, Ryan O'Rourke (Norwood,
Mass.) singled a batter later bringing in Wirkus and
Hussey. After Melvin Purdue (Jonesboro, Ga.)
walked, Evan Kelleher (Haverhill, Mass.) singled
to center scoring Gunn. Sucharewicz then came up and delivered the
big blow to put the Hawks up 7-0 after just one out in the top of
the first frame. A Nick Moreau (Manchester, N.H.)
single put Eckerd starter, Anthony Katchuk (Safety Harbor,
Fla.), out after a tough outing, going only one-third
of an inning, allowing seven runs.
Bobby Gibbons (Bradenton, Fla.) came in relief
for the Tritons and the Hawks picked up their fourth straight
hit, as Hussey reached base safely for the second time in the
inning. Wirkus walked for the second time in the inning loading the
bases as the Hawks were threatening again. Gibbons induced the
6-4-3 double play ball though, stopping the Hawks' early rally.
Gibbons went on to throw 6.2 innings only allowing one run.
The Tritons came back with four runs in the bottom of the first,
as this game looked like it could be a battle of the bats. A
Tim Lorek (Snellville, Ga.) three-run homer capped
the rally, as the Tritons cut the lead to 7-4.
Both teams pitching settled in after the first inning. The
Tritons picked up a lone run in the second thanks to David
Kelley (Winter Springs, Fla.) leading off the inning with
a single and scoring later on a past ball. The Hawks got that run
back though in the fifth, as Sucharewicz picked up his fifth RBI in
just as many innings, briging home Purdue on a single.
The Tritons brought it back to 8-7 in the sixth, as
Tyler Howard (Manchester, N.H.) scored on a wild
pitch and Jeff Bromley (Tampa, Fla.) singled home
Kelley in the inning.
The Hawks added some insurance runs in the top of the eighth.
After Sucharewicz singled up the middle and Moreau sacrificed him
over to second, Steven Panza (Watertown, Mass.)
came in to pinch-run for a little more speed on the basepath. It
proved to be unnecessary though as Wirkus went deep for the first
time this season, a two-run shot giving the Hawks a 10-7 advantage.
The Tritons came back with two runs in the bottom of the inning,
and neither team scored in the ninth, as the Hawks held on for the
10-9 victory.
Eric Simm (Salem, N.H.) picked up the win for
the Hawks, throwing two innings of relief, allowing no earned
run on three hits. David Giarrusso (Cranston,
R.I.) picked up his second save of the season, throwing
the last three innings, allowing two runs on five hits with one
strikeout.
The Hawks return to the diamond tonight, taking on Florida
Southern at 7 p.m. in Lakeland, Fla.
