Easton, Mass. (March 25) -- The Saint Anselm
baseball team dropped a 12-6 final at Stonehill on Tuesday
afternoon, dropping the Hawks to 5-10 overall, 1-3 Northeast-10.
The Skyhawks improve to 11-6 and remain undefeated in conference
play at 3-0.
The Skyhawks struck first in the top of the second as
Brendan Shepard (Boxford, Mass.) tripled to right
to open the inning. Shane Franz (Cazenovia, N.Y.)
brought in Shepard just two batters later with a ground out,
putting Stonehill up 1-0. The Hawks responded in the bottom of the
inning though with two runs. After Melvin Purdue
(Jonesboro, Ga.) walked and T.J. Murphy (Reading,
Mass.) singled, Eric Baca (Franklin,
N.H.) brought in Purdue with an RBI single. Evan
Kelleher (Haverhill, Mass.) then brought in Murphy with a
ground out.
The Skyhawks tied the game back up in the top of the third
picking up another single run. Mitch Davis (Bow,
N.H.) doubled down the left field line with two outs and
Nate Weber (Hanson, Mass.) brought him in later in
the inning with a single. The Hawks responded with two runs again
in the bottom of the inning though. After Dave Wirkus
(Orange, Conn.) singled and Ryan O'Rourke
(Norwood, Mass.) walked, Ryan Gargan (Byfield,
Mass.) delivered a double, bringing in both Wirkus and
O'Rourke.
After a scoreless fourth, the Skyhawks struck for another single
run to cut the lead to 4-3 in the fifth and another single run in
the eighth to tie the score up at four apiece. The Hawks took a 6-4
lead though in the bottom of the inning when Gargan hit his third
homerun of the year, a two run shot, plating Wirkus who had singled
earlier in the inning. The Skyhawks knotted in back up at six in
the top of the ninth to send the game into extra innings.
The Skyhawks scored six in the top of the 13th inning to put
away the Hawks, 12-6.
Nick Barese (Braintree, Mass.) got the
no-decision on the afternoon throwing eight innings allowing nine
hits and four runs, three earned, with five strikeouts.
David Giarrusso (Cranston, R.I.) picked up the
loss throwing 3.2 innings allowing four hits and three runs, two
earned. Dan Corrigan (Portsmouth, R.I.) picked up
the win for the Skyhawks, improving his record to 2-0, going five
scoreless innings allowing four hits with three strikeouts.
The Hawks are back in action on Thursday, traveling to Stonehill
again for a 3:30 p.m. game.
