Easton, Mass. (March 26) -- The baseball team
dropped its fourth straight game on Wednesday afternoon, falling
8-4 to Stonehill at Lour Gorman Field in Easton, Mass. The loss
drops the Hawks to 5-11, 1-4 Northeast-10. The win improves
Stonehill to 12-6, while remaining a perfect 4-0 in league action.
The Skyhawks wasted no time getting on the board, as they struck
for two runs in the first and three in the second to take a 5-0
lead. After back-to-back singles to open the first from
Mitch Davis (Bow, N.H.) and Javier Guzman
(San Juan, P.R.), Davis scored on an error two
batters later. Dave Fradette (Goffstown, N.H.)
singled to bring in Guzman. In the second, Davis and Guzman got the
rally started again, both drawing one-out walks to put runners on
first and second. After a fly out moved Davis up to third,
Brendan Shepard (Boxford, Mass.) brought in Davis
with a ground ball and reached first on the error. Fradette then
doubled to bring in Guzman and Shepard.
The Hawks responded with a pair of runs in the third and a
single run in the fourth. After a Nick Moreau (Manchester,
N.H.) single, Adam Hussey (Danvers,
Mass.) reached on a fielder's choice with Moreau getting
cut down at second. After a Dave Wirkus (Orange,
Conn.) single, Ryan Gargan (Byfield,
Mass.) delivered a double to center a batter later,
bringing in Hussey and Wirkus. In the fourth, Benn
Gunn (Vineyard Haven, Mass.) walked to open the inning and
Matt Stone (West Roxbury, Mass.) doubled to bring
in Gunn.
After a scoreless fifth, the Skyhawks came back with
two more runs in the sixth and then another single run in the
eighth. After a Matt Orr (Wilton, Conn.) single
and a Rob Van Stein (Trumbull, Conn.) single
opened the inning, both runners moved up a bag on a successful
sacrifice bunt from Davis. Guzman then doubled to bring in Orr and
Von Stein. In the eighth, Davis opened the inning reaching
base on a hit-by-pitch. Guzman then reached on a bunt single. After
a Nate Weber (Hanson, Mass.) ground out moved both
runners up a base, Shepard brought in Davis on a ground out.
The Hawks got a single run back in the ninth, as
Wirkus walked and later scored on a Matt Sucharewicz
(Peabody, Mass.) double.
Andrew Long (Peabody, Mass.) got pegged
with the loss for the Hawks going 5.1 innings allowing eight
hits and seven runs, four earned, with three strikeouts.
Kyle Lavin (Shelton, Conn.) pitched well in relief
going 2.2 innings allowing just two hits allowing one run with one
strikeout.
Mat Lindenmayer (Penfield, N.Y.) improved his
record to 2-1 on the hill for the Skyhawks, going seven
strong innings allowing seven hits and three runs with a trio
of strikeouts. Nick Peters (Newton, Mass.) threw
well in relief, picking up four strikeouts over just two innings of
work allowing just one hit and one run.
The Hawks are back in action on Friday, traveling to Bridgeport
for a non-conference battle at 3 p.m.
