Springfield, Mass. (March 18) -- After being
tied 5-5 at the half, the Saint Anselm men's lacrosse team scored
seven unanswered goals to start the second half to cruise to a 15-7
victory over American International to improve to 3-3 overall and
1-1 in Northeast-10 play.
Matt Surette (Wakefield, Mass.) gave the Hawks
a quick 1-0 lead just 1:36 into the game before AIC evened things
up with 9:48 left in the opening quarter on an even-strength goal
by Mike Szawlowski. The Hawks pushed the lead to
5-1 midway through the second quarter before the Yellow Jackets
scored four straight goals in a span of just 7:27 to send the game
into halftime tied at 5-5.
The Hawks scored five unanswered goals in the third quarter and
added two more to begin the fourth before AIC stopped the scoring
run with 11:15 left in the final period to make it 12-6. The Hawks
scored three more times in the final minutes, including a pair of
goals from freshman Steve Porter (Hopkinton,
N.H.).
Surette led the Hawks with five goals, while Matt
O'Connell (Charlestown, Mass.) finished with four assists.
Freshmen Dan Flynn (Wakefield, Mass.) and
Pat Acone (Bow, N.H.) split time in goal as Flynn
made eight first-half saves and Acone made three saves in the
second half to pick up the win.
The Hawks are now 3-3 overall and 1-1 in Northeast-10 play and
are back in action on Saturday, March 22nd when the team travels to
Bentley for a 4 p.m. start.
