Syracuse, N.Y. (February 16) -- Despite a
20-point, 11-rebound double-double by senior forward
Cassaundra Thorpe (Portsmouth, N.H.), the Saint
Anselm women's basketball team fell to Le Moyne by a 58-46 final on
Saturday afternoon.
Le Moyne built a 21-12 lead with 6:26 left in the first half,
capped by a three-point play by Kathleen
Gladstone. Over the next four minutes, Saint Anselm went
on a 10-3 scoring run and pulled to within 24-22 with 2:26 left.
That run was capped by four straight free throws by Thorpe. Le
Moyne held the Hawks scoreless for the remainder of the half and
took a 28-22 edge in the break.
In the opening minute of the second half, Le Moyne pushed the
lead to 30-23 before eight straight points from Thorpe pulled Saint
Anselm back to within one at 31-30 with 15:11 remaining. After the
Hawks again pulled to within one at 34-33, the Dolphins pushed the
lead into double figures at 43-33 with 8:07 left in the half. Saint
Anselm managed to again pull within three later in the game before
the Dolphins came away with the 12-point victory.
Thorpe was the lone Hawk in double figures with a 20-point,
11-rebound effort as the Hawks managed to shoot just 22.4 percent
from the field in the game. The Hawks were excellent from the free
throw line though with a 23-for-28 afternoon. Courtney
Coryea was the lone Dolphin in double figures with a
19-point, 10-rebound double-double.
Saint Anselm falls to 6-19 overall and 3-17 in league play,
while Le Moyne now stands at 13-11 overall and 10-10 in the
Northeast-10. The Hawks are back in action on Saturday, February
23rd as Saint Anselm travels to Franklin Pierce for a 1:30 p.m.
