Hawks Drop Home Opener to Pace, 56-40

Manchester, N.H. (November 19) -- Led by a 21-point effort from Brittany Huggins (Windsor, Conn.), Pace University defeated Saint Anselm by a 56-40 final on Wednesday night in Northeast-10 women's basketball action at Stoutenburgh Gym.

In the early going, Pace jumped out to a 15-4 lead before the Hawks trimmed that down to six at 15-9 following a jumper from sophomore guard Jennifer Gureckis (Nashua, N.H.). The Setters closed the half on a 9-4 run though to head into the halftime break at 24-13.

In the second, the visitors built the lead to as many as 25 points and with 4:16 remaining in the game, held a 53-30 advantage. An 11-1 run cut that lead to 54-40 with 1:13 left after a three-point play from Megan Howard (St. Paul, Minn.), but Pace took the 56-40 victory.

Saint Anselm was led by a 14-point effort by Howard, while Haley Poupore (Malone, N.Y.) was the leading rebounder with eight boards. Huggins led all scorers with 21 points for the Setters and was joined in double figures by Shiesha McCollum (Newburgh, N.Y.) with 11 points and seven rebounds in 34 minutes of play.

Saint Anselm falls to 0-3 overall on the season and 0-1 in the Northeast-10, while Pace is 1-0 overall and in league play. The Hawks are back in action on Saturday, November 22nd as the team travels to Assumption for a 1:30 p.m. start in Worcester, Mass.
