(November 22) -- Saint Anselm couldn't overcome a
quick start by Assumption as the Hawks dropped a 66-42 final to the
Greyhounds on Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference play at
Laska Gym.
Assumption opened up a quick 17-4 lead behind eight points from
Leslie Lupien (Pomfret Center, Conn.). The Hawks
stopped the run on a jumper from Jennifer Gureckis (Nashua,
N.H.) for a 17-6 deficit with 11:40 left in the first
half. The Greyhounds pushed the lead to 21 points at 39-18 with
1:23 left period before taking the 39-20 halftime lead into the
locker room. Freshman Haley Poupore (Malone, N.Y.)
led the Hawks with eight points on 4-for-5 shooting in the half,
along with a team-high four rebounds. Molly Griffiths
(Walpole, Mass.) led all scorers with 13 points, joined in
double figures by Lupien with 12 points. The Greyhounds forced 12
Hawk turnovers in the opening period, while turning it over just
twice.
In the second half, the Greyhounds used eight quick points from
guard Beth Plasski (Fall River, Mass.) to push the
lead to 29 at 58-29 before coming away with the 66-42 victory.
Megan Howard (St. Paul, Minn.) led the Hawks
with 14 points and 12 rebounds, her xth double-double in her first
four collegiate games. Poupore also finished in double figures with
11 points and six rebounds. Griffiths led four Greyhounds in double
figures with 15 points, followed closely by Lupien with 14 points.
With the loss, the Hawks fall to 0-4 overall and 0-2 in the
Northeast-10, while Assumption now sits at 4-0 overall and a
perfect 2-0 in the league. Saint Anselm returns to action on
Tuesday evening as the Hawks travel to the University of New Haven
for a 5:30 p.m. matchup with the Chargers.
